Sage Francis coming to Dallas!

Posted in Buck 65, Granada Theater, Sage Francis, Tour Dates at 2:22 am by Jared

Jesus Christ, I’m going to stop reporting so many tour dates if it kills me…but I had to mention that Sage Francis is coming to the Granada Theater on June 8 along with Buck 65 (who I mentioned in my SXSW post that I sort of…fell off of) and two other acts! Sage Francis is an incredible lyricist, if you don’t know, and yet another white rapper showing that he can hold his own. The fact that it’s at Granada Theater makes it so much sweeter.

EDIT: He’ll be playing Emo’s in Austin the very next day, June 9!

Thrice East Coast Tour Dates Announced

Posted in Moneen, New Album, Norma Jean, Receiving End of Sirens, Tour Dates, thrice at 1:00 am by Jared

Man, I’m on a freaking roll with these tour dates…then again, spring and summer are on the way, and that means it’s open touring season! Just a small update for anybody who might be checking in from the east coast…found these on Thrice’s official website. Expect a more complete list of dates to follow, as Teppei announced in Thrice’s studio blog that the four-EP elements project (Earth, Air, Fire, Water; one album devoted to the sonic stylings of each) is nearing completion – and completely self-produced. Thrice has gone DIY. Very cool. Teppei’s a creative genius, so I’m sure it’ll sound pretty rad! But I digress (note the typo in Moneen’s name!):

May 1 Orlando, FL @ Firestone w/ Norma Jean, Receiving End of Sirens, Moneed
May 2 Atlanta, GA @ The Masquerade w/ Norma Jean, Receiving End of Sirens, Moneed
May 3 Charlotte, NC @ Tremont Music Hall w/ Norma Jean, Receiving End of Sirens, Moneed
May 4 Towson, MD @ Recher Theater w/ Norma Jean, Receiving End of Sirens, Moneed
May 6 East Rutherford, NJ @ Meadowlands Sports Complex Bamboozle

Still Waiting…

Posted in Dustin Kensrue, Manson, Marilyn Manson, Slayer, Tour Dates at 11:00 pm by Jared

No call from the Dustin Kensrue camp yesterday. I must get to the bottom of this. I still need a tape and batteries for my recorder anyway :o )

And a brief news hit: Marilyn Manson and Slayer are set to tour this summer! Believe it or not, Manson puts on a hugely entertaining live show. He’s quite the performance artist. And Slayer? Come on. How many chances do you get to see Slayer these days? Click here for the full story.

Smashing Pumpkins 2007 Tour Dates!

Posted in Reunion, Smashing Pumpkins, Tour Dates at 12:20 am by Jared

Well, they’re all outside America’s borders, but the point is the Pumpkins are playing again! Of course, the Toadies are playing again (about…once a year – St. Patrick’s Day) and it doesn’t really mean THAT much. Of course, it could just be me being bitter again about not being 21 yet. Not that I’m set on drunkenly thrashing my arms to “I Come from the Water” (which will happen one day at a Toadies reunion show, I’m planning it), but I can’t make the age limit! Come ON! Since when has an underage person surrounded by raging alcoholics ever posed a problem? *shrugs*

Click this link to check out the Pumpkins’ tour page. As mentioned, no American dates are set yet. I assure you that they will be. This has been in the works for a solid year, if not more. You know I’ll be reporting on any further updates from the Pumpkins camp. They rule(d).

A Real Interview with Dustin. Finally.

Posted in Dustin Kensrue, Interviews, thrice at 3:53 am by Jared

Yes, my dear readers (if you do exist; I’m almost sure you do), the headline is true: I have finally set up an interview with Dustin Kensrue. This ain’t no cheesy email interview – this is a real deal phone interview. I’ll be speaking with Dustin on Thursday evening, recording the entire conversation, and transcribing it. Since I’ll be wanting to publish it in the SMU Daily Campus, I imagine I’ll buckle down and write that record review I’ve been…pushing back. So by early next week, hopefully, expect to see either an enormous article or a nice two-parter. I like leaving things right in the middle, so the two-part article is more plausible. I’m ecstatic.

By the way, sorry for lack of updates! I’m still alive, and I’ll be around. Keep checking back.

I = Meeting Halle Berry (sort of)

Posted in Daily Campus, Giovanni Ribisi, Halle Berry, Interviews, Perfect Stranger, Press Screening at 9:30 pm by Jared

So, being a member of the press has nothing but benefits. I mean, writing under deadline is stressful as all Hell, but getting into shit for free is indescribable. Our Associate Entertainment editor at the Daily Campus, Samantha Urban, emailed me a press screening invite for the upcoming Halle Berry/Bruce Willis flick Perfect Stranger. It’s going to be taking place tomorrow at a nearby theater starting at 2:15. Even better, I’m invited to press round table interviews with both Ms. Berry and Giovanni Ribisi, who’s also appearing in the film. Hmm. Should I accept? Halle Berry, school. Fancy Italian-named guy, homework. Free movie, no free movie. It’s a tough one to weigh out. Expect a review to follow on Wednesday, if not Tuesday, and perhaps some pics if I’m lucky (and can ever find a camera).

My SXSW Experience: Part One

Posted in 6th Street, Austin, Flaming Lips, Naked Cowboy, SEM, Science Engineering Magnet, UT, University of Texas, Wayne Coyne, sxsw at 8:48 am by Jared

I am a Dallas guy (which is ironic, because the name of my blog happens to be “Dallas Rocks”). I’ve been in this city all twenty years of my life. For around the past five years or so I’ve been attending concerts in Deep Ellum and getting to know the streets downtown. It’s a slow, slow work in progress. My brain does not comprehend directions. I’m always disgruntled because, I guess, I was never “gruntled” to begin with. But I’ve managed to familiarize myself with the major streets in downtown (that matter), such as Main, Elm, Live Oak, Commerce, etc.

Austin is a place that I am not familiar with at all. I made the 200 mile journey alone, keeping myself awake with music. I got directions off the internet and just set off with no more than a half hour of serious planning and another half hour of packing. I threw together a backpack with some books, my iPod, my laptop, a spiral notebook, some pens and pencils, and a copy of Dustin Kensrue’s album (for autographing purposes). I left Dallas at a little after 6 AM on Friday morning.

I knew from the map that I would be passing UT Austin before I hit downtown. I planned to stop on campus, take a little tour around, and hopefully meet up with some friends (which never happened, as all the Austin kids I knew were very likely back in Dallas for Spring Break). With my uncannily sharp sense of direction to guide me, I honed in on the nearest parking garage (which happened to be the last general parking garage on campus, and of course it was farthest away from where I was headed). I set out in my worn-out Converse, some corduroys I found at American Eagle for ten bucks, and an old Saves the Day shirt. The weather was only very slightly chilly until the sun came up; its warm rays cancelled out the wind’s edge. Even so, I alternated back and forth between wearing my jacket and schlepping it around behind me for the first couple of hours.

Being on UT campus brought back memories for me. I went to a magnet school (Science and Engineering Magnet, to be precise) for high school, and the only extracurricular event I really cared about was Spelling and Vocabulary. My senior year I finally made it to the State level of competition, which is essentially the finals. Competition took place at the University of Texas. I remember it well, because in between taking a test and receiving the results (I lost) a former student ran into me and the spelling coach, who was a freshman English teacher at my school, had a conversation with her about her career choices and how college was going. She told him that she was thinking of being an English teacher. He told her she was crazy. I didn’t heed his advice. Now I’m an English major. Ugh.

After about an hour of wandering across campus, calling up friends with no results, I made my way down to the state capitol. I’ve been there at least once, perhaps twice, but it was pretty exciting to be back. I asked for directions inside, and found that the road to SXSW waited just around the corner and out the door. I exited onto Congress. I knew I was going the right way based on the 6-ft tall guitars with custom paint jobs that stood like monuments at scattered intervals along the road. I once again failed at finding the most efficient way to the heart of the party, walking in circles until I ran into a more populated section of downtown. 6th Street. I understood right away that 6th Street was Main Street. There were relatively few people there before noon; I stopped into a couple of bars only to be driven out by mediocre bands playing to empty houses. In fact, the first band I got suckered into seeing reminded me of the worst of Dallas music: a bunch of thirty-something guys dressed up in clothes that make them look “totally rock and roll” with a lead singer belting out lame hair metal lyrics. I didn’t know the gentlest way to leave. I was the audience.

Things started picking up once I ran into the Naked Cowboy. He was walking right down the middle of 6th Street. I remembered seeing him on The Tonight Show or something similar some months ago, and I whipped out my camera phone to grab a picture (because, like a true winner, I didn’t even think once about dragging along a camera). He saw my phone and immediately turned and flexed. What a freaking bad ass.

I continued on down the road, drifting in and out of the various venues, bars, and smoke shops that line 6th. Around noon I stopped in Roppollo’s Pizza, a local pizza shop that’s reminiscent of Franzini’s here in Dallas. It was pretty good for 3 bucks a slice. I took a brief nap (drifting in and out of consciousness with my head down for about ten minutes). Then I headed back out into the daylight.

6th Street held more surprises for me once I reemerged into the daylight. I noticed an odd group of men standing in the middle of the road, all five of them dressed in matching white jeans and white track jackets. Several of the guys had full beards. This told me that I was looking at a band. Beards are “hot” right now. I noticed that the guys were being interviewed by a really messy-haired guy in a nice 70’s college professor suit. He was holding a microphone that bore the words “The Tonight Show with Jay Leno”. I moved in closer.

The band (I wrote the name down somewhere) was filming a little song and dance skit for the show, and they kept fucking it up. Twenty minutes later, they had it down. It was pretty entertaining to watch. I seriously couldn’t figure out who in the hell the man was. I feel dumb now. It was Wayne Coyne. I’ve gone on rambling for far too long tonight. Time for me to slap on a “To Be Continued…” sign…

To Be Continued…

SXSW Experience: A preview

Posted in Austin, Buck 65, El-P, Flaming Lips, Jay Leno, Naked Cowboy, The Tonight Show, Wayne Coyne, sxsw at 12:18 am by Jared

I’ve got a busy day of catching up (AKA doing everything I was supposed to be doing all week), so I can’t sit and write a full entry right now. But OH, I will! For now, I’ll summarize the best of what I can fire off the top of my head and come back later with more details. I’ve got wonderful stories to tell, so make sure you tune in later (or tomorrow, not sure when I’ll get the chance).

Also, I’ve been tracking my blog reader stats and you guys are really starting to tune in! I plan on keeping things updated for sure, now. I started this as an experiment in journalism and an exercise in discipline. I figured if I could keep up a blog – for free – about a topic I love, it would be great practice for when I’m getting paid to write. If you’re interested in adding my feed, I’ll tell you really quickly how to add a live bookmark for Firefox. Click on the Bookmarks drop-down and then click “Organize Bookmarks”. When a window pops up, click File and go down to “New Live Bookmark”. Under Name, call it whatever you want. For the location, paste this link: http://smukid.wordpress.com/feed . Once the bookmark is made, drag it into your Bookmarks Toolbar folder so that you can access all of my posts with a single click!  Without further ado, here is your preview.

  • Met Naked Cowboy walking down 6th St.
  • Witnessed some crazy man interviewing a couple different bands for SXSW coverage on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno. Was excited because it was The Tonight Show. Am now excited because I just realized that the crazy man was none other than Wayne Coyne, eccentric frontman for the enormously popular indie/experimental band The Flaming Lips. Why, oh why did I not shake his hand? Ugh.
  • Saw some good underground hip-hop, Buck 65 and El-P
  • Sampled the local pizza
  • People watched (interesting stories here)
  • Got hit on by a drunk woman who tried to spark up conversation with me because I was holding a notebook. She was in her late twenties, maybe early thirties. She looked like she had kids. I was uneasy.
  • Blown away by a two-piece band’s performance…must research, find the band’s name, and I will have the full report. Let me just say that there was a guy playing blues slide guitar (along the lines of Jack White during his De Stijl years) and a drummer with a kit made out of what looked to be spare junkyard parts. It was like Stomp and a nice blues boogie down combined.
  • I’m sure there’s more, but I’ve gotta run! In the meantime, read a little about Mr. Buck 65 at his official website. He’s along the same lines as Sage Francis, a very heady, introspective lyricist with a flow that sounds like Les Claypool’s best attempts at rapping.

Would love to review El-P’s new release…would also love to finish my Dustin review. Before Monday, it will be up. That is my deadline.
